Our Story

After working with students during a civic leadership program at Northwestern University his sophomore summer, Akhil Kumar realized the large-scale impact consistent tutoring and mentorship can have on young kids educational journeys. Wanting to bring that same support back to the Quad Cities, he co-founded Beyond the Student with his close friend, Andrew Grau, to provide tutoring, mentorship, and encouragement to local youth.
Our Mission/Values
At Beyond the Student, we strive to provide accessible, high-quality assistance for children in 1st through 5th grade, enabling them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. We deeply value empathy, inclusivity, and integrity, ensuring that every student is heard, supported, and understood. In addition, we foster creativity and perseverance, empowering students to think critically, problem-solve, and embrace challenges with a positive mindset.

What We Do
What We Do
Tutoring
Tutoring
Beyond the Student provides weekly or biweekly after-school tutoring to students in grades 1-5, with an expansion to grades 6-8 coming soon, ensuring that high-quality academic support is accessible to all families in our community. We focus on providing comprehensive academic excellence, assisting students in core subjects including Math, English, Reading, and Writing. Teachers at the individual school or high school tutors have the ability to determine the curriculum and worksheets.
Our Tutors
Our tutors are high-achieving high schoolers who act as both teachers and mentors, helping the students with homework while boosting their confidence.
Benefits
Our program bridges the gap between elementary and high school students, creating a more interconnected and supportive school district. By identifying and addressing learning gaps early, we help students overcome academic hurdles before they reach middle or high school. Our mission is to go beyond current coursework by fostering independent learning skills and long-term academic success. Our high school tutors create a more comfortable and open environment for students due to a closer age range.
Structure
To best serve our students, tutoring sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs and requirements of each individual school. Generally, sessions begin between 3:15 and 3:20 pm and conclude at 4:00 pm, providing a focused and productive end to the school day.
STEM Assembly
STEM Assembly
Our team of passionate, high-achieving high school students provide engaging STEM workshops featuring numerous interactive, hands-on activities. This workshop assembly is typically for half a school day, taking place during regular school hours, and is intended for a single grade level. We set up 8-10 different stations around a gym, cafeteria, or multiple classrooms with unique activities like Legos, Math, Story Writing, Origami, Oobleck, Snap Circuits, and building the tallest tower using spaghetti and marshmallows. Each station has one tutor and typically lasts 10 minutes. Our goal is to take complex concepts and make them accessible and fun to spark a lifelong interest in STEM that goes beyond the classroom and into real-world innovation. These activities are flexible and can be adjusted depending on what is convenient and worthwhile.
