Return-to-School plan as of July 30, 2020

Feedback and Planning

As we all know, the spring threw us into an unexpected move toward remote learning. While the district, staff, students, and families all contributed flexibility and resilience to a positive outcome, we know we can do better! The feedback you provided to the district on what worked for students and what didn't during our spring remote learning has helped frame the district's approach for fall. Keeping the health and safety of our staff, students, and community, as well as the Illinois State Board of Education guidance at the forefront of decision-making, the details of the MHS plan are explained below.

Choose the Full-Remote Learning Option

Fully remote learning is also available to any district student. Students under the full-remote plan will not attend any school days in person. Do this through Skyward Family Access, if interested.

High School Return to Blended Learning Plan Details

Overview:

The high school will be utilizing a blended learning model, where students will be instructed remotely 3 days per week and in-person instruction will take place 2 days per week. To help reduce student stress levels, assist with organization and work completion, and allow opportunities for clear academic focus, the students will only engage in half of their courses each quarter, still earning a semester's worth of credit in that time.

Weekly Schedule*:

  • Mon/Tues - Students with last names A-L attend in-person classes at MHS. Students with last names M-Z work on remote coursework.
  • Wed/Thurs - Students with last names A-L work on remote coursework. Students with last names M-Z attend in-person classes at MHS.
  • Fri - all students work on remote coursework, with the possibility of scheduled google meets video instruction
  • Students who opt in to the district's full remote option will not be attending any in-person days. To opt for full-remote, please visit the district website under "Return to Learn" for instructions on how to complete the form through your Skyward Family Access account.

Quarter 1 In-Person Class Schedule:

Period 1 - 8:10 - 9:35

Period 2* - 9:40 - 11:00

Period 3 - 11:05 - 12:25

Friday Google Meet Times (these are times teachers can choose to host a google meet for all or for only the full-remote students, at their discretion)

Period 1: 8:15 - 8:45

Period 2: 9:00 - 9:30

Period 3: 9:45 - 10:15

Remote Lessons:

  • The district site will host Learning Hubs for each building; weekly lessons for each course will be posted in the MHS Learning Hub.
  • The week's lesson will be posted by 8:00 a.m. each Monday. Students will need to check the Learning Hub link, following the lesson and/or links as provided by the teacher.
  • MHS teachers will be using either Google Classroom or a new program, Edgenuity, as the vehicle for most student lessons. Parents are able to access some google classroom information and Edgenuity progress through parent portals; please contact the teacher if you are not invited to access the parent portal

Grading and Attendance:

  • Assignments will be graded, and courses will be assigned traditional grades through Skyward, using our common grading scale (90-100% is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, and 59% or below is an F)
  • Daily attendance procedures will be communicated prior to the start of school.

Study Halls:

  • Study halls will still be listed on student schedules, if students elected to take one.
  • Since our first quarter will only include Period 1-3 classes, parents may choose to call their student out of a Period 1 or Period 3 study hall. No schedule changes will be made to accommodate a move to one of these periods, however.
  • If you would like to excuse your student from a Per 1 or Per 3 Study Hall, please contact the attendance office (743-8811 or 743-8812). Parentally-excused students will be expected to remain off campus for the time of that study hall.

Communication:

  • Teachers will be providing updated grades weekly through Skyward.
  • We strongly encourage parents to access their students' grades through the family access portal for Skyward.
  • Email communication to teachers is encouraged and will be attended to with appropriate turn-around time to help get any concerns resolved.
  • Teachers will be available periodically between 7:55 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. for remote students to send email or google chat questions. They will also be conducting in-person lessons with the other half of their students on most days, so immediate responses should not be expected.

Sports, Clubs, Activities,and Events:

  • Sports participation and schedule will be communicated through the Athletic Department. IHSA has recently modified seasons for many sports to both allow athletes to fully participate and also maintain student health and safety.
  • Clubs and Activities at MHS may continue, as long as social distancing, masking, and maximum participation of 50 people in one location are met. Staff advisors will begin planning for meetings after the school year begins, so look for more information to follow.
  • Major events, like Homecoming activities, will certainly need to be adapted to fit the current health regulations. While the traditional student events surrounding the fall at MHS won't be possible, the staff will do its best to offer alternative activities to help the students celebrate these milestones.
