BLUEPRINT FOR TEACHING - GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed as an overview of the foundations of the teaching profession, including the basic values, structure, organization, and programming of teaching. Students will gain knowledge of a variety of educational theories and will observe professionals in the classroom. This course is required for Architecture of Curriculum and Instruction. Course objectives: 1) demonstrate the ability to interact professionally with peers and district faculty and staff 2) evaluate/reflect the extent to which he/she possesses or needs to develop the dispositions characteristic of effective teachers 3) assess career interest in the teaching profession 4) become knowledgeable of the executive, interactive, and organizational functions of teaching 5) identify the impact of classroom management as it pertains to the classroom environment and learning 6) identify significant influences on education and the characteristics of twenty-first century teachers 7) formulate a beginning philosophy of education. FIELD EXPERIENCES: Students will be provided continuous on-site field experiences where they will visit classrooms in our district, meet with a mentor teacher, and be able to apply knowledge they have learned in their course first- hand. ARCHITECTURE OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION - GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course students will learn about the teachers main mission: enhancing student learning. Students will apply theories while creating effective learning activities. Students will also evaluate and reflect on the observations of a variety of professionals in the field of education. This course is required for Constructing a Learning Community. Course objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to interact professionally with peers and district faculty and staff
- Evaluate/reflect the extent to which he/she possesses or needs to develop the dispositions characteristic of effective teachers
- Identify and apply the elements of universal design to effective instruction
- Apply significant influences on education; including theories and pedagogy
- Develop learning activities that utilize the components of developmentally appropriate instructional design and the needs of diverse learners.

CONSTRUCTING A LEARNING COMMUNITY - GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to further enhance the student's ability to apply and implement educational theories and pedagogies as it pertains to the classroom environment. Students will evaluate and engage in a constructive learning community over the duration of their field experience with a mentor teacher. Course objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to interact professionally with peers and district faculty and staff
- Evaluate/reflect the extent to which he/she possesses or needs to develop the dispositions characteristic of effective teachers
- Implement learning activities that utilize the components of developmentally appropriate instructional design and the needs of diverse learners
- Identify strategies for creating a plan for a positive and safe classroom environment
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of classroom management strategies
- Learn the major components of professional teaching and learning standards for the state of Illinois and the role of these standards in the certification and teaching
- Create and defend a philosophy of education.
