CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

Natural Helpers will meet during lunch today in room B131.

Attention Crime Stoppers:  There will be a Crime Stoppers meeting tomorrow after school in room E204.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be meeting Wednesday morning in room E114 at 7:30.  All students are welcome to join us.

TL applications are available to any junior or senior wanting to be a TL for the 2017 Natural Helpers retreat. Applications can be picked up in B131 during your lunch today or the Counseling Center. Applications are due to Mrs. Hoover no later than Wednesday at noon.

This Thursday, after school, the History Club will be hosting a Veterans Day assembly to honor local veterans.  The assembly will be at 3:10 in the auditorium where you can learn about our veterans and what they have done.  If you have a question you would like to ask a veteran, please drop it off in the box outside of Mr. Lamphier’s room, E214.  Please come and show your support for those who have saved our country.

COUNSELING CENTER

National Honor Society Members–There will be an important Share Joys Kick Off meeting on Tuesday, November 8th at 7:00 in the cafeteria.  If you are planning to participate in NHS Share Joys activities, please attend.

Calling all Donut Eating Teams!  We will need 30 teams to step up to raise money for Share Joys. To accept the challenge and have tons of fun, please see Mrs. Ryser in the Counseling Center.

The following scholarships are now available:

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program – Available to high-achieving senior students with financial need who seek to attend and graduate from the nation’s best 4-year colleges and universities. Recipients receive funding for up to 4 years for undergraduate studies. Deadline of November 30th.

Big Sun Scholarship – All senior student athletes are eligible regardless of the sport they are engaged in. Recipient must submit a short essay. Deadline of June 19, 2017. For applications and more information visit the Counseling Website

Attention seniors:  If you did not get your picture taken at Photographic Arts, a photographer will be here on Wednesday, November 9th, from 8:00 until 12:30 in the auditorium.  If you will be getting your picture taken, you might want dress up a little more than usual.  Please make sure that you take advantage of this opportunity, as it is free and so you can also be in the 2017 “M.” We want all of our seniors to be a part of this memorable book.  Once again, Photographic Arts will be here on Wednesday until 12:30.

Attention juniors and seniors: We have a new online service for sending transcripts called Parchment.  Parchment is a simple online way to Request, Send and Store Transcripts. Juniors and seniors will receive an email from Parchment to create an account and then you’re ready to start sending transcripts (you may need to check your spam folder).  This service will allow students to send unlimited transcripts to colleges free of charge.

Special Olympics basketball practice has been cancelled for this week.

French Club will meet today in J323 to watch a French film.  There will be snacks, and you are invited to bring a snack to share.

Spanish Club:  Come to J328 after school today to plan for the belated Day of the Dead party next week.

All MHS students who want to raise one third of the money for Share Joys needed to buy clothing for over 260 Moline School Dist. students and the Share Joys program:  Form a team of four students to be in the annual Share Joys Donut Eating Contest sponsored by Donut Delite.  All students who are interested in participating in the Donut Eating Contest must attend a brief meeting today at 3:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center.

St. Ambrose University is having an Exploring Engineering event on Wednesday, Nov. 9th from 6 to 8 p.m.  For more information, please come to the Counseling Center.  You must reserve your spot by Nov. 7th.

SPORTS

November 9th is the first day for the National Letter of Intent for prospective Student-Athletes signing to participate in sports at a College or University.  If you plan on signing early, please contact your Head Coach so we can include you in the ceremony held at Wharton Field House next Wednesday at 2pm.

Can you sing? Dance? Play an instrument? Perform magic tricks?  Tryouts for the 67th annual Share Joys Talent Show will be held in the Auditorium on Wednesday, November 16 from 3-6 pm.  Sign up outside of E-208 by November 10th.  All costumes, acts, skits, and music must be brought to tryouts!

Intramural Basketball will start on Wed Nov 16th.  Team forms are now available at the bookstore.  There are only spots for 8 teams and it is first come first serve so don’t wait.

The Moline Public Library’s Teen Advisory Group will meet at 3:30 this afternoon. TAG is your chance to help plan programs and events for the library, suggest books and other materials, and earn service hours.

Come out tonight at 6:30 to Wharton Field House and watch the “Powder Buff” volleyball tournament! One team will be crowned champion and will have bragging rights for the year! There will be a total of 7 games.  Admission to this tournament is 3 cans or 3 dollars.  All donations will go to the Student Hunger Drive.  Teams are being coached by the girls’ volleyball players, so this is sure to be a great, must see competition!  See you there.

If you can help out with the collection of cans from the elementary and middle schools, come by J128 to get involved.  This is a really fun time for the hunger drive to see all the cooperation throughout the district schools.

Attention to anyone interested in participating on the Boy’s Swimming & Diving team this winter!  A pre-season meeting will be held today at 11:30AM-12:30PM at the Pool.  Important details will be covered at this meeting including details on team suits and apparel. If you are interested but unable to attend, you will need to meet with Coach Frederiksen during an open swim. Open swims will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:00 A.M. Season will officially begin on November 21st.

Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS) – Teachers, counselors, and community members are invited to nominate intellectually curious and motivated sophomores for the Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS). In 2017, TASS will take place between June 25 and August 5. Seminars are completely free, and we will provide work-replacement and travel subsidies as needed. *Nominators are encouraged to complete their recommendations by November 14, 2016 to allow sufficient time to distribute applications by mail — final deadline of December 1, 2016.

All seniors who are going on the Black Hawk Field Trip tomorrow must be in the Gymnasium in Building 3 by 8:30 a.m.  Students taking the bus should be ready to board by the “M” at 8:10 am

Any girls who are interested in playing basketball: Girls Basketball Tryouts for freshmen and sophomores are today at 3:15-5:30 in the East Gym. Varsity tryouts are today at 6:00-7:30 in the East Gym and 3:30-5:00 at Wharton Field House.

MISC

Congratulations to all powder puff teams for their sportsmanship and ability to help the Student Hunger Drive raise money and collect cans of food. The sophomores defeated the freshmen by a score of 8-0.  The seniors defeated the juniors by a score of 20 to 6.

Today is the last day of the period 2 can competition.  Thanks to all who donated.

Tomorrow is the dodgeball tournament in the East Gym, starting at 6:30 p.m., with a double elimination format.  If you have a team and want to be involved, turn in your team registration by the end of the day today.

Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. is the boys’ volleyball tournament at Wharton Field House.  Admission to the tournament is a donation of 3 cans or $3. COUNSELING CENTER

The following scholarships are available:

Quad City Engineering and Science Council Scholarships – Multiple one-time scholarships for high seniors pursuing a STEM degree at a 4-year college or university.  This has a deadline of January 24, 2017.

American Academy of Art’s Senior Scholarship Competition – Will be held on November 19th and December 3rd — Applicants must be a graduating high school senior interested in attending American Academy of Art and able to attend one of the two event dates to participate in figure and still life drawing sessions.

SPORTS

Booster Bash raffle tickets:  Please return all sold Booster Bash tickets to your coach.  Any unsold tickets need to be returned to your coach as well.

Any girls who are interested in playing basketball: Girls Basketball Tryouts for Freshman and Sophomore are Monday, October 31 3:15-5:30 in the East Gym. Varsity tryouts are Monday, October 31 6:00-7:30 in the East Gym and 3:30-5:00 at Wharton Field House.

Global Lift Equipment Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded $500 scholarship. Applicants must plan on attending a post-secondary institution in the U.S. or Canada by no later than fall 2017 and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  This has a due date of June 15th.

Lift Parts Express Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enroll at a college or university by the fall of 2017. This has a due date of June 30th.

Raffle basket tickets are available now in the Learning Grounds Café.  Hope to see you there!

Orange Leaf has extended their 10% percent of receipts until this Sunday.  Put your receipt in the jar marked Moline High School!

Girls who have paid for their powder puff shirts can pick them up in room J128.

Any student that is interested in applying to a scholarship to study abroad should visit www.NSLIforyouth.org   Deadline for this scholarship is October 27.

World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin – For students interested in global issues and building a strong portfolio for college and future careers. Applicants must be between the ages of 16-18, have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school and are in good academic standing. The seminar will be held June 24-30, 2017. This has a due date of May 30th.

Got a Spine Scholarship – Recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship. Applicants must be attending a college or university on a full-time basis no later than October 2017 and have a GPA of 2.5 or greater during their last academic year. This has a due date of June 2nd.

Attention all students interested in wrestling this year: there will be a mandatory informational meeting today at 3:10 in room E114.  If you are unable to make it to this meeting see coach Cross.

For any boy interested in trying out for the Moline High School basketball team, there will be a meeting for all levels today at 3:15 in room E204.

Attention All Seniors:  If you haven’t had your senior portrait taken yet, you need have it done by November 1st so that you can be in this year’s yearbook.  The session for your school picture is free, but you can buy pictures if you want.  If you need to schedule an appointment, please contact Photographic Arts at 762-6662.  Make sure you are a part of the 2017 “M.”

Need help with homework?  After school tutoring is available on early release Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in room B325.  Stop in to get the help you need for as long as you need!

Come join the fun at Wharton Field House on Wednesday evening at 5:00 for the annual Swishing Together event! Our MHS basketball players and Special Olympics basketball players will be playing in an exhibition game to raise money for Special Olympics.  Cost to get in the door is only $1 or one canned good item! Raffle basket tickets are available now in the Learning Grounds Café.  Hope to see you there!

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

Natural Helpers will be meeting in room B131 during lunch today.

Sports Unlimited will have a Halloween-themed activity today in the cafeteria from 3:00 to 4:00.  All are welcome.

Reminder: Kaleidoscript is selling lollipops at all lunches today. KStaff should stop by and help sell. Also, deadline for Whitewater registration is today.  Get your forms to Mrs. M in the morning or sometime before 3:00 pm.  Turn in lollipop money soon.

There will be an Authentic Voices meeting on Tuesday, October 25th during period 2 and 6.  You may come to only one meeting.

There will be a meeting on Tuesday after school in Mr. Mahieu’s room, B318 for anyone interested in raising awareness of eating disorders and helping those affected in our community.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be meeting Wednesday morning in room E114 at 7:30 a.m.  All students are welcome to join us.

COUNSELING CENTER

The following scholarships are available:

Richard J. Collins Scholarship – Applicants must be graduating from Moline High School and have participated in a middle school or high school sport within the Moline School District.

William H. Kleinschmidt Scholarship – Applicants must be a senior or former graduate of a high school in Rock Island County and currently live in Rock Island County. Applicants must plan to pursue a degree as a full-time student in a health-related field of study; nursing is preferred. A preference is given for attending college or training in Rock Island County.  However, all students are encouraged to apply.

Hey students- Support two great causes:  Plan to attend the “Swishing Together” event – MHS and Special Olympics basketball players together for an exhibition game!  This event will take place on Wednesday, October 26th at Wharton Fieldhouse.  Doors open at 5:00 and the game begins at 5:30.  Admission is 1.00 or a canned good for the Student Hunger Drive.

Join us for this fun, family friendly event to raise money for MHS Special Olympics.  We will have raffle baskets, face painting, concessions, and fun!  Halftime competitions for great prizes!  Cash donations accepted at the door.

There are only 6 days left of the can competition between classes.  Now is the time to bring in those cans!

The Empty Bowls event is happening Tuesday evening.  Don’t miss it.  Plan to come out eat some great soup and bread and support a great cause!

There are 13 girls who still need to pay the bookstore before the powder puff game.  Please take care of this ASAP.
