Share joys is a program in which money is raised to buy needed clothing for children in Moline and Coal Valley. Share joys started in 1949 when Betty Hasson, editor of the school newspaper, the Line 0' Type, originated an idea to have a toy contest where all entries would be given to children in need. After a couple of years, clubs and organizations began to donate money so that extra toys could be purchased. LO'T staff members decided that the campaign for toys should have a name and called it "Share Joys Buys Toys." The program was expanded when paper tags were sold for 25 cents each for classes to display in their rooms. Always, the emphasis was to prepare students to be "sharers" and to learn to care.
